Editors' Round Table

From the December 1987 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When the new Journal arrives next month, you'll notice a difference. Last year, you may recall, the Sentinel was redesigned to stay "abreast of the times," See Manual of The Mother Church, Art. VIII, Sect. 14 . as required in the Church Manual by Mrs. Eddy. And this year it has been the Journal's turn. The most obvious thing you'll notice is the change in size, from 6½ X 9½ to 8⅜ x 10⅞ inches. This is the standard size of many monthly publications. The alteration in page size will save production time. The larger page size will also permit more white space for ease of reading and variety in design. We do realize there may be some temporary inconvenience in relation to Reading Room shelves, but after weighing all the alternatives we felt this was the right decision to make at this time.

If there is a theme or keynote to the new Journal, we think it would be this—the new spiritual vision and sense of possibility for today's movement that are growing among Christian Scientists, and their willingness to do whatever it takes to work together now to fulfill this vision.

This new sense of things is much more than catching some other people's excitement about the close-of-the-century phenomenon. It isn't New Age euphoria. It is a genuine, deep-seated, though slowly dawning recognition that the age really is conforming in many ways to Mrs. Eddy's prophecy in regard to it. The human mind really is crying out "for what immortal Mind alone can supply." Miscellaneous Writings, p. 365. There is a new spiritual hunger, in the midst of terrible challenges that are nearly Biblical in their proportions.
