Room for innocence

From the June 1988 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Banish discord of the unkind word;
muffle the envious friction of belief
that one's pure light is dimmed
by another's glow. ...
Simply pray and know
the Word again, its inexhaustible
ability to sweeten and refresh
the famished longing for new holiness.

What if the tempter
try with guile or force
to shake a new resolve to stand alone,
to flatter or dislodge this newfound joy?

Simply recall the scene
at Bethlehem:
Men and angels were in conference.

Hatred could not reach the promised child
nor disturb the sweet communion
that Mary heard
in all its eloquence.

Even material law was silenced by
such rapt attention to Love's holy will. ...

We too can quench the noise
of human sense
and so make room for every innocence.
