Dealing with disappointment

[Original in German]

From the June 1990 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Have you ever been disappointed? "Yes," most of us would say. But, if truth be told, did dwelling on feelings of disappointment ever really help? Giving in to disappointment often leads to brooding. And brooding about an unfortunate situation does not really contribute to a solution. However, thought that strives to overcome disappointment by uniting with God is uplifted through divine grace, through Christ, Truth.

Christian Science shows us that God is Spirit and that man, His idea, is spiritual, thus immortal and sinless. Man in his true spiritual nature is upright, truthful, loving, and pure. God, who is all-present and all-powerful Love, can never disappoint. Consequently, His spiritual idea, man, can neither disappoint nor be disappointed, for he expresses God.

Disappointment may be the result of relying on material means and methods that have failed. On this subject, Mrs. Eddy writes in the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health: "Matter is not self-sustaining. Its false supports fail one after another. Matter succeeds for a period only by falsely parading in the vestments of law."  Science and Health, p. 372.
