A democracy of brotherly love

From the November 1993 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Democracy is on many people's minds right now. People all over the world are reaching out for it.

The teachings of Christian Science show that there's a spiritual basis for democracy in human affairs. An understanding of this spiritual basis provides a firm foundation for anyone desiring to help establish or improve a democratic system of government, whether in one's church, community, or nation.

In accord with the Bible, Christian Science teaches that there is one God, who is Spirit, and that man is His offspring, created in His image. The true identity of each one of us, then, is God's spiritual image and nothing less. This means that we are all equal in God's sight. Although we are each individual, God doesn't see any one of us as "better" than any other one. He doesn't favor any one of His children over another, because He created each one as the perfect expression of His nature.
