Why should anybody go to church?

From the April 1993 issue of The Christian Science Journal

My friend faces a dilemma every Sunday morning and Wednesday evening. Should he go to church—or to Newbury Street?

Now, Newbury Street is a charming, one-of-a-kind street that many people think is the heartbeat of Boston's Back Bay. It's filled with shops, cafes, boutiques, and bookstores. At most hours of the day or night, it literally pulsates with excitement, color, noise, and action.

Pedestrians of every description stroll up and down this historic street—glamorous people, homeless people, professors and students, artists, tourists, and people-watchers (like my friend). One day I even saw a man walking down Newbury Street with an enormous spotted snake wrapped around him.
