Inheritance: material or spiritual?

From the December 1994 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It occurred to me one day that heredity could be seen as referring to a lot more than just the transference of physical characteristics from parent to offspring, or from past mortals to present. And I began seeing the whole concept of heredity from a new perspective.

For instance, have you ever found yourself mulling over past mistakes and ailments as though they were somehow inherent in you—like bad character traits inherited from an ancestor? Well, I have. But Christian Science shows us that such beliefs about ourselves are totally contrary to the reality of man in God's image.

When we accept the spiritual fact that man's true being is the pure, innocent child of God, eternally perfect as the reflection of God, we get rid of what might be called, from the perspective of this article, self imposed heredity. Such heredity is the nagging belief that we're forever stuck with the possible recurrence of certain sins and diseases because we are mortals who have succumbed to them in the past.
