The irresistible leaven

From the September 1996 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christ Jesus said, "The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened." Matt. 13:33 At a time when individual and collective challenges may suggest we're engaged in a battle the outcome of which isn't entirely certain, this parable is reassuring.

It reminds us that the great truths of spiritual reality—of God's supremacy and man's perfection as His image—are always acting to enlighten human consciousness, even if their influence isn't readily apparent. They're the outcome of Truth itself. Because Truth, another name for God, is All, it ultimately penetrates and dispels whatever would deny it. Men and women who understand that Truth is the source of their real being, and live accordingly, both experience and forward Truth's transforming of thought. This leavening may not always be serene but it is irresistible. It will eventually change the entire lump of human thinking.

Jesus is our example. His path wasn't tranquil. Yet living in obedience to the loving, divine intelligence he called Father, he was able to walk unharmed through hostile crowds, calm destructive forces, and heal devastating and long-standing diseases. In this way he showed that the often harsh elements of a material world have no genuine authority. He said, "In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world." John 16:33 Truth's leavening, he implied, would eventually overcome all fleshly-mindedness, which constitutes the material world.
