Giving gratitude—even "two mites"

From the November 1997 issue of The Christian Science Journal

One day Christ Jesus was sitting near the temple treasury, watching people put in money. Many rich men dropped in much money, Mark tells us in chapter 12. Then a poor widow came along and dropped in "two mites," worth about a penny. Touched by this scene, the Master called his disciples together and said, "This poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury: for all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living."Mark 12:42-44

Jesus' important words here have special relevance to something that will be happening this week all over the world in Churches of Christ, Scientist, and Christian Science Societies. Men and women and young people will be sharing experiences of healing through God's power made possible by the spiritual understanding they've gained from the teachings of Christian Science.

Mary Baker Eddy certainly placed great emphasis on demonstrating Christian Science and on telling others the good news that it heals. She says in this regard, "If Christian Science lacked the proof of its goodness and utility, it would destroy itself; for it rests alone on demonstration." Miscellaneous Writings, p. 365 Also, in the Manual of The Mother Church, she points out, "Testimony in regard to the healing of the sick is highly important."Manual, Art. VIII, Sect. 24
