The Bible kept our ranch afloat

They prayed every morning before tending the crops.

From the August 2001 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The most exciting class I had in college was my Sunday School class. My favorite times were the one-on-one classes, where I could ask all the questions I wanted to. I was a new student of Christian Science, so I had a lot of questions. And I had a wonderful teacher.

The local cannery had not renewed the contract for our family's crop.

What I was learning had a direct effect on my life. I was at a large university, over ten times as big as the town I'd grown up in. What a shock! Each week I would copy a Bible promise on a scrap of paper and stick it in my pocket. When I felt afraid or overwhelmed, those verses comforted me. I memorized lots of Bible promises that way. One of my favorites was from Isaiah: "I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee." Isa. 41:13.
