Candle–lighting celebration—comments and photos

From the August 2002 issue of The Christian Science Journal

, Chief Executive Officer of The Mary Baker Eddy Library for The Betterment of Humanity, began the Library Lighting Celebration by introducing the Mary Baker Eddy Library's Board of Trustees: Virginia Harris, Chairman; Walter D. Jones, Treasurer; Don Wilson, Secretary; Peter Ackerman, and Allen Weinstein. Steve Danzansky's opening statement included the following:

We come here tonight to both celebrate and reflect. We come from towns and villages, cities and states, countries and continents, the world over to mark this historic occasion. And we'll be lighting up the night with the love and the light that have illumined the lives of each and every one of us.

The last hymn played on The Mother Church chimes is titled "Lead, kindly Light." It had special meaning to Mary Baker Eddy. In the fall of 1899, a branch church in Washington, D.c., sent her a resolution declaring its loyalty to her and the Cause of Christian Science. She sent a stirring letter in response and specifically asked that her letter be read to the Church and that "Lead, kindly Light" then be sung by the congregation.
