Emma McDonald—letter home from class with Mary Baker Eddy

From the March 2004 issue of The Christian Science Journal

took the first of four classes with Mary Baker Eddy in Chicago, in May 1884. During the class she wrote to her family in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Although she expresses her doubts in the letter excerpted below, she became a healer and later a teacher of Christian Science.

Chicago, Ill. May 16, 1884

We have taken our third lesson, I cannot tell how we will come out yet. Mrs. Eddy says alright, but I am doubtful sometimes. If you can come down here for a day or two you can come right here and go in the class for a lesson or two. I wish you could hear some of her explanations, they are just grand. I can understand some parts of the Bible so much better than I ever could before. There was a Dr. Thomas came in the class for a short time this morning. Did you ever read about him? He is a Methodist. We have Doctors and ministers and all kinds of people in the class.
