BREAKING FREE OF TRADITION

From the June 2008 issue of The Christian Science Journal

We know practically nothing about one of the more spiritually minded individuals who ever lived on planet Earth. We do know he had a close relationship with God. So close, in fact, that he never died. Instead, he lived many years and then was lifted into heaven. And we know his name was Enoch. That's about it.

My intuition tells me this was a man who didn't live in a palace or enjoy an extravagant material lifestyle. He's one of my heroes because I imagine him as an example of spiritual simplicity and purity. We do know more about Elijah. And vastly more about Christ Jesus. All three—and perhaps others—found their way into heaven, well, shall we say, unconventionally. They broke with tradition.

The significance of these three lives wasn't built around collecting typical material luggage. Their lives were more about putting off worldliness than taking it on. Ultimately, they weren't weighed down so much that they were unable to be lifted up out of mortality.
