DISLOCATED TOE HEALED

From the July 2009 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Over Twenty Years ago, I caught one of my little toes on something and pulled it out of place. It was loose and didn't function properly. If I tried to spread my toes on that foot, the toe didn't respond, and I had no muscular control over it. I was away from home at the time and had a busy schedule, so I just carried on. There was no pain, and I didn't give the incident much thought. But this was how the toe remained for two decades.

However, last year a growth started to appear on the inside of the toe at the point where the injury had occurred all those years before. It became steadily worse to the point where shoes began to be uncomfortable and walking on the foot was painful. I had to wash my foot every morning when showering, but have to admit that I just thought of the growth as an annoying inconvenience because there were more important things for me to be thinking about.

One morning, though, it dawned on me that these thoughts had nothing whatever to do with healing. I felt chastened and rebuked, and immediately reached out in prayer for a spiritual view of the situation. Two ideas immediately came to mind very clearly. The first was that I needed to prayerfully deal with—and dispose of—the belief that there had ever been an accident or breakage. And the second was that I needed to have a completely different attitude toward caring for my body.
