All in a day's fishing

From the October 2012 issue of The Christian Science Journal

No matter what our profession or vocation—fishing, athletics, exploring, or working in an office—each of us can rely on divine Mind for perception, courage, dedication, and intuition. As Mary Baker Eddy writes, “To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. vii).

I understand the “sustaining infinite” as the all-knowing, all-providing divine Mind. This support is there for everyone who is willing to trust in God. Here’s an example. Early one morning my brother and I launched our boat into a coastal estuary. We were bobbing along over choppy bay water when, without warning, the motor died.

The riptide would bring lots of water into the estuary, but we knew of a deep side-channel that traveled a long way into the mangroves and would protect us from the strong wind and current. My brother was able to start the motor again, and he directed our aluminum dinghy out of the main channel toward our fishing spot. It stalled three more times before we were safe from the elements.
