It seems that the statement sent out through the associated press dispatches, and, of course, published in all the leading dailies in the country, to the effect that a number of indictments had been preferred against Christian Scientists by the grand jury at Utica, N. Y., because of the death of Mrs. Canfiled, was a canard. The fact is that no indictments whatever have been found. On the contrary the Scientists who appeared before the grand jury were treated with the utmost courtesy and are said to have made a most favorable impression. It has been said that this canard was sent out by interested persons for the purpose of influencing legislation over the country against the Scientists. We do not vouch for the correctness of this view of it.
