I am an ex-country editor, whom the loss of his paper, through political and other vicissitudes, drove to Kansas City and to the occupation of proofreader. In June, 1908, I was violently attacked by acute kidney trouble, somewhat in the nature of Bright's disease. Although I was not a Christian Scientist, I still had a leaning that way, chiefly on account of having learned of cures following the treatment by Christian Science practitioners. So, having despaired of any results from medical aid, I was advised to try a practitioner at Kansas City, Kan. By this time I had given up any attempt to work, and was almost too weak to walk to the cars, so by the advice of friends I took a room at the home of the practitioner and became one of her patients.
At this time the disease was in its acute stage, and I had no rest day or night from excruciating pain. Like others who have recovered by the mighty help of Truth's healing power, I cannot look back and see how I survived the agonies of the terrible hours in my room before I went to the Scientist's home: but soon after I had placed myself under her care I began to be soothed by her calm trust and confidence in divine power, and through this and the reading of Science and Health, peace, spiritual and physical, came upon me. My racked body ceased to be tortured, and I began to be built up anew. In the latter part of August I was back at work, busy until a late hour every night.
There is no doubt about the condition I was in. Medicine had no effect on me. Comparative strangers have since told me that they noticed my appearance on the street and considered me a doomed man. I had gone down to about half of my usual weight. My friends, in congratulating me on my recovery, said that although they did not tell me so, they honestly thought I would never pull through. So I have great reason to be thankful for this demonstration of the Science of Truth discovered by Mrs. Eddy, who has surely furnished the key to reopen the understanding of life that now means so much to many a moribund sufferer. People need not hesitate to trust this strange new healing truth, which is the same old gospel of the love of God manifested in the days of Christ Jesus.
