On returning from a well-known health resort in 1907, without having been healed, I one day exclaimed, "O how I wish that some great scientific person would discover a universal remedy for disease which would make everybody well!" Soon after this a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy came into my hands, and on the first page of that book were the words, "Desire is prayer." On reading page 316 the realization that sight is spiritual was borne in upon me, and the glasses which have been deemed necessary for more than twenty-five years were laid aside and the book finished without them.
The journey was only begun, however, and it took faithful and continued study and some help from a practitioner before I could read newspaper print, handwriting, and musical notes. One by one, however, these difficulties were removed, the reading of music being the last to surrender, as it had been the original occasion for the use of glasses. Standing in church, reading the words of a hymn, but unable to keep the notes on the staff, the thought came that God is able to save even to the uttermost, and that there is no limit to His power; and this realization was sufficiently clear to sweep the mists away which had prevented my taking part in the singing.
At the time when I first read Science and Health I was suffering from great physical weakness, also night-sweats and rheumatism, but my strength returned almost instantaneously and the accompanying symptoms of weakness disappeared, so that I was immediately able to do what ever it was my duty to do without fear that physical exhaustion would follow. Attacks of malaria, toothache, rheumatism, and a persistent pain in the back of my neck, have all been overcome by Christian Science treatment.
