My mother, my sister, and I were paying an afternoon visit to a doctor's wife. As a slight shower of rain was falling, we waited for a while. We had not taken ten steps from the door towards a tall tree when we were struck down by lightning. I found myself on the ground, unable to move, and then saw my mother beside me with blood running from her nose and mouth. While I was considering how we came to be there this thought flooded my consciousness: "God is Life, indestructible." The next instant I was unconscious.
The thunderclap was so alarming and near that the doctor and a friend ran out from the consulting room, and saw the three of us lying apparently dead on the ground. When my sister was lifted up she was quite conscious, and declared there was nothing wrong with her. although she was numb. She was able to help mother mentally when they were carried into the house. The doctor was greatly alarmed at mother's condition, and said her nose was broken by the fall, also that she could never recover from such a shock. Her face was scratched and badly bruised, and her arm and chest likewise. My sister told them we believed in Christian Science, and so refused the doctor's kind offers of medical assistance. Every fear he voiced about mother's condition my sister denied, and then declared the truth as taught in Science. Slowly mother's speech became clearer, and in about an hour's time she expressed the wish to return to our home. She was able to walk to the motor.
The friend who lifted me up thought, as the doctor did, that I was dead. I was laid on a couch on the veranda, but do not know how long I was in this state; my next recollection was as of waking from a dream and being unable to move.
