When Christian Science first came to my notice I had been suffering and in ill health for many years. I was miserable and depressed, continually grieving that I should have become such a burden to my husband. Financial difficulties added to my distress, and it seemed at times impossible to rise above these wrong conditions. The only thought that helped me to do my best to live was the thought that my husband and children needed me.
In March, 1915, as a last resort, I appealed to a Christian Scientist to help me; and I was healed of valvular disease of the heart. Later in the year I was overcome by a severe illness, and for six months was unable to sit up. Sometimes I was able to be dressed and lie upon a couch. During those months of illness I saw a physician once, but he said he could not help me. So we patiently kept on with Christian Science treatment, although apparently there was no progress made for some time. The healing, however, came very gradually, almost imperceptibly.
In June of the following year I was able to go to the first lecture given by the branch church in this town. This seemed to be the turning point; for very soon I was able to go to the services, and later on, during the winter of 1916 and 1917, although a winter of fogs, sleet, and rain, I never once missed a service. During these months I was healed of a displaced kidney, and all the distressing conditions which seemed to be part of that trouble. I was also healed of gastric trouble, recurring ulcers in the mouth, and chronic rheumatism, together with neurotic trouble.
