It has been my privilege for quite a number of years to know something of Christian Science and to witness, during that time, many beautiful healings of so-called incurable diseases among my friends, as well as to experience many healings myself. I should like to relate my first introduction to Christian Science. Up to that time I had heard very little of it, and I had formed an erroneous opinion of its teachings as a result of what I had heard.
I was suffering with what the attending physicians diagnosed as incurable heart trouble. They informed my mother that I might live two months, but that I might pass on at any moment. Upon learning of the physicians' verdict a neighbor, who was an ardent student of Christian Science and who had been the object of my criticism because she did not employ medical treatment for herself or her children, very lovingly came to my mother and told her of Christian Science. On page 266 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy uses the quotation, "Man's extremity is God's opportunity;" and we surely had arrived at our human extremity and were ready to turn to God for help. A Christian Science practitioner was called and the work commenced. Relief from the extreme fear and suffering came at once, and in two weeks the healing was complete.
Some time later I applied for enlistment in the National Guard of the state in which I was then a resident. The examining surgeon was one of the doctors who had pronounced the aforesaid sentence upon me, and after he had examined and accepted me I asked him how the heart was. This recalled to his thought his former verdict, so he again gave that organ a very thorough examination and pronounced it perfect. I cite this phase of the experience simply to show that even from a medical viewpoint Christian Science heals the so-called called organic diseases as readily as it does the local or functional disorders.
