A demonstration over disease or sin has been likened to the surmounting of a new rung on the heavenly ladder. Like the angels in Jacob's dream at Bethel, so the healing thoughts from God are ever ascending and descending. These healing messages are perpetually revealing the nothingness of evil and the allness of God, until evil disappears and man at last sees himself as he really is— as God's pure idea.
There are two such "rungs" or experiences for which I am intensely grateful. One is my first healing through the study of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, in the spring of 1893—the healing of a complication of diseases regarded as incurable. The other experience is a more recent healing, through absent treatment, of a chain of ailments manifested after I became a resident of Pleasant View Home.
Mrs. Eddy's statement that Christian Science is prophylactic as well as curative had made a deep impression upon me, so much so that the few difficulties, such as burns, results of accidents, and stings from poisonous insects presenting themselves during the years following my first healing were always quickly overcome. During this entire period I was not obliged to submit to the subtle tyranny of the sick bed for one hour.
