AS long ago as I can remember I tried to find some connection between what I believed to be religion and the teaching and healing work of Christ Jesus. I could perceive none, and finally came to the conclusion that his meaning was misunderstood. I prayed sincerely for this meaning to be uncovered, as the world was so much in need of help. Then I gave up all attempt to follow any form of religion, although I felt nearer to God than I had ever felt in my life.
I had been educated in medical theories, and as a nurse I had worked in one of the largest surgical clinics in the world. I saw what an uncertain reed humanity had to depend on in this way.
The light came when Christian Science found me, and I was able to see almost at once that this was the doctrine Jesus taught and practiced. A short time before this awakening came I had an accident, and the experience left me with a fracture of the hip. After spending many months in hospitals and going through a severe operation, I was able to get around on crutches. Then it was believed necessary for me to have an X ray taken for a state compensation board. The doctors informed me that the bone in my leg was crumbling away, that I should never be any better, and should probably get worse. At this point, though I had not heard of Christian Science, I had such faith in God that I refused to accept this verdict, for I seemed to feel that prayer would prevent such a thing overtaking me. A few months later I was left alone in a large city, and to human sense I was in quite a helpless condition. Here a friendship was formed with two students of Christian Science, and through them I was lovingly guided to the study of the Christian Science textbook. The understanding and healing came to me gradually, and I was restored to usefulness and right activity.
