THE rules of mathematics remain unchanged, regardless of any mistake that may be made in applying them. It is human ignorance which deprives men of the solution of their daily problems. So in divine Science God, the divine Principle, and man, the forever perfect idea, as cause and effect, remain unchanged. Following this scientific reasoning we learn that the application of God's law—in Christian Science treatment—changes neither God nor man; but it does bring to human consciousness the apprehension, unfoldment, and demonstration of the reality of being. And these in turn, correcting human ignorance, bring out in human experience the manifestations of health, holiness, harmony—the kingdom of heaven, here at hand—the evidence that man eternally reflects the primal perfection, wholeness, and goodness that characterize the image and likeness of God.
The law of God has ever existed, and has always been available. Throughout the ages, spirituallyminded persons have caught glimpses of its wonderful power, and used it in some degree. Jesus the Christ did not receive the full understanding of divine Principle all at once, but by reason of his spiritual origin and nature he intuitively grew in his perception and demonstration of God's law more than any other has done. It was only after his triumph over death that he rose to the supreme proof of the unreality of all materiality and ascended above all human selfhood. From first to last, Jesus' demonstrations were manifestations of God's power and presence, which instantly dispelled the darkness of sin, sickness, and death with the light of holiness, health, and life. Thus it was that Jesus' ministry fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah, "The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined."
It should never discourage one if he does not grasp the full understanding of Christian Science in a comparatively short time, for even of her own experience its Discoverer, Mrs. Eddy, says (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 109), "The revelation of Truth in the understanding came to me gradually and apparently through divine power." Nevertheless, we can be grateful to know that the law of God is clearly revealed and completely expressed in the Christian Science textbook. This means that we have available for instant use the same divine power that was understood and demonstrated by Christ Jesus. Therefore, the Christian Scientist of today, instead of being satisfied with mediocre work and demonstration, should strive to accomplish the works of Jesus, yes, even the "greater works" which he said, in effect, should follow the apprehension of the divine Principle he taught.
