"OTHER FOUNDATION CAN NO MAN LAY"

From the February 1945 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian peoples profess to be governed by the teachings of Christ Jesus, who has been distinguished by the title "Way-shower," and whose teachings are likened to a rock—"that spiritual Rock... Christ," or Truth (I Cor. 10:4). In order intelligently to follow these teachings it is necessary to know and to understand them and to demonstrate their rules, proving with scientific certainty their practicality. These teachings and rules are to be found in the Bible. One may wonder then why that Book of books does not have a foremost place for consultation in every council chamber, every legislative hall, every court room, every business bureau, and at every peace conference of all Christian nations; why its use is largely confined to the church for certain days of the week.

One of the principal reasons for this is that the Bible has been interpreted literally, or from two bases, Spirit and matter. Such interpretation makes for confusion, inconsistency, doubt, and fear. Now the Bible is not primarily the material history of a race of people. It is a record of the revelation of Truth, making God known as Spirit, divine Principle, who maintains, in omnipotence, perfect law and eternal harmony. It reveals the unity of Principle and idea, God and man, indivisible. It reveals all men to be one in origin and expression, the government of one being the government of all, the good of one being the good of all.

An intelligently humble follower of Christ Jesus, Mary Baker Eddy, discovered this spiritual import of the Bible and has given to the world its scientifically spiritual interpretation in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." This discovery and its authoritative demonstration have lifted the teachings of Christ Jesus out of the realm of mere religious sentiment, moral laws and obligations, into an exact Science, which, understood and demonstrated, brings salvation, individually and collectively, to mankind. So it is true, as St. Paul so clearly discerned (I Cor. 3:11), that "other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ."
