"THE UNIVERSAL SOLVENT OF LOVE"

From the February 1945 issue of The Christian Science Journal

To solve the problems in the world today the active participation of every individual is required. No one can be excused from making his daily contribution to the cause of peace, progress, and universal salvation. As one is daily confronted with a picture of lack, war, and other untoward material conditions, one may ask himself, "What can I do to correct this condition?"

Certain rules and counsel given us by Mary Baker Eddy show us specifically how to carry on this spiritual activity. In the following words she advises (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 242): "In patient obedience to a patient God, let us labor to dissolve with the universal solvent of Love the adamant of error,—self-will, self-justification, and self-love,—which wars against spirituality and is the law of sin and death."

The enemies of mankind, namely, "self-will, self-justification, and self-love," must be met and mastered by every individual; and this is accomplished by the practice of unselfed love in daily thought, word, and deed. Christian Science is the Science of individual salvation, and it dispels error from the thought of the individual. One's purpose should be not to change the world, but to exchange erroneous concepts of thought for the correct concepts of God, man, and the universe. One can then attain, through "patient obedience to a patient God," that state of consciousness where Love is ever present.
