I am profoundly grateful for Christian Science, the law of good, which has restored the true religion of our Master and Way-shower, Christ Jesus, as taught in the Bible and in our precious textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and in her other writings.
Over thirty years ago our little family was deep in sorrow and sickness. I had been faithful in attending an orthodox church since a child, but had been prompted by a sense of duty and fear of displeasing God, whom I could not define in the least. When sickness came to us, we placed all confidence in the doctor, and yet we prayed to God for help with pleadings and supplications. Human thinking was so dark that I felt not the least sense of gratitude for life. Christ Jesus said (John 3:3), "Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." This was my necessity, to be born again; for right where mental darkness and suffering seemed to be, the Christ was patiently waiting to redeem me.
My next-door neighbor was a student of Christian Science and knew of our sick household. My sad face impelled her to offer to lend me her copy of the Christian Science textbook. Self-pity prompted me to refuse, but she left the book anyway. A week later I very reluctantly took it up to peep inside and shut it again quickly when I saw these words on page 1: "Thoughts unspoken are not unknown to the divine Mind. Desire is prayer." I had never known that before. It was very comforting. I reopened the book and continued reading until I finished the chapter on Prayer; then I could scarcely wait to read more. When I had finished reading the textbook, in about two weeks, all sense of a weak, broken body was healed, after five years of misery. Another member of the family, who had been ill for two years, was also healed at the same time. These healings were accomplished solely through my reading Science and Health.
