HARMONIOUS ADJUSTMENT FOLLOWS SPIRITUAL ENLIGHTENMENT

From the October 1948 issue of The Christian Science Journal

READJUSTMENT may be a joyous and profitable experience. It surely will be if viewed from the standpoint of Christian Science, for then it is recognized as an opportunity to glorify God and grow in spiritual understanding. Furthermore, the Christian Scientist's Truth-filled consciousness will, like the "little candle" of Shakespearean fame, throw its beams far out into the darkness of materiality, illumining and uplifting the receptive thought.

In the realm of spiritual reality a perfectly ordered relationship of God's ideas already is the spiritual, eternal fact of being, expressing God's law of harmony and order. Mary Baker Eddy writes (No and Yes, p. 26), "God holds man in the eternal bonds of Science,—in the immutable harmony of divine law." In this realm of Spirit —man's only real dwelling place—there are no displaced persons, no shortages, no losses of home, income, or occupation. Only in the illusive realm of materiality do these discordant conditions seem to exist as the result of erring mortal thought, and in this realm they must be met and mastered with Truth.

God's universe, including spiritual man, is the expression of His infinite selfhood. In this universe only ideas and qualities of Spirit, Mind, are reflected. Overturning, turmoil, and maladjustment are the supposititious reversal of true stability and peace. In divine Mind there is no reversal of spiritual facts. In reality only the divine law governs man and the universe. Whatever we seem to find in our human experience that is inharmonious, out of place, or apparently governed by material law is not the reality of being, but only mortal, erring belief. Such belief is annulled and destroyed by the intelligent application of spiritual law, the law of "immutable harmony."
