ON page 259 of "Miscellaneous Writings" Mary Baker Eddy writes, "When the Lawgiver was the only law of creation, freedom reigned, and was the heritage of man ; but this freedom was the moral power of good, not of evil: it was divine Science, in which God is supreme, and the only law of being."
Every statement of Truth is a statement of divine law. It exists as law, it operates as law, it is manifest as law; and as divine law it is inevitable and inviolate. The theory that man is material presupposes a false genesis, and in belief places the one who holds it under a code which assumes the authority of law, but which in fact has no lawful authority. There are no material laws to govern man, for the simple reason that law is not material, but spiritual. If there were a code of material laws, it could not operate in man's experience; and since the spiritual is the real and eternal, the material so-called laws must be void and illegitimate.
A conclusion reached from this line of reasoning is that in proportion to one's understanding of man's spiritual origin and nature one becomes obedient to the laws of God, Spirit, which are wholly beneficent. When one is faced with an erroneous condition, the questions might well be asked : Is it lawful? Does this situation conform to divine law? Is it beneficent, constructive, and healthful? If the condition is one of sickness or sin, the answer would unquestionably be: No! It is not in accordance with God's law; therefore it is illegitimate.
