Science And Health by Mrs. Eddy was brought into our home and laid carefully aside for some time. One day when problems were pressing, the words "Christian Science" came to me as if illuminated in letters of gold, and I thought, We have a book on that subject; it might be wise to look into it. So I read Science and Health from cover to cover. I confess I understood very little of it. However, I did glean from that first reading that Science was what I wanted, and I was eager to understand and apply it. It was a long time afterward that I realized I had been healed of eyestrain, a case which the optician had pronounced serious.
Soon after reading Science and Health, I went to Ohio to visit an aunt. I was taken ill with influenza, and I thought, Now is the time to see what Christian Science can and will do for me. I had never talked to anyone about Science or seen a practitioner, but I called up one of whom I had heard, and she came out to see me that afternoon. She did not talk very much about Christian Science. She got the impression that I understood about it, and I said to her: "Oh, no, I know very little about it. I have just read the book once." I was far more eager to learn about Christian Science than I was concerned about the illness.
She told me to come down and see her the next day. With surprise I responded: "Tomorrow? Well, I will if I am able." Despite a little feeling of disappointment, I thought, I have asked her to help me, and I must have faith. The illness vanished, and the appointment was kept the next afternoon. Her kindness and loving consideration in answering all my questions so impressed me that I left her with the deep assurance of being able to gain the understanding for which I was so eager.
