I found my way to Christian Science, as it were, through the back door. My wife became interested in it for relief from physical problems which were troubling her. Although I was then engaged in business as a pharmacist and was well versed in materia medica, I reluctantly went along with her desire to attend a branch Church of Christ, Scientist. In this way Truth gradually penetrated my consciousness, and in time I came to see the light. Since that time this Science has meant good health and many other blessings for both of us. We are and shall always be grateful.
Several years ago, while spending an early spring week end at a north woods lake where we have a small cottage, I was attempting to clear away some logs and driftwood which the spring floods had deposited on the beach. A log, which I was attempting to loosen, suddenly came away, and I fell over backwards, carrying the log with me and landing a short distance below in shallow water. I threw out my hand to break my fall, and as it struck the sandy bottom I felt my wrist snap and give way. As I raised myself from the water, a passage from one of Mary Baker Eddy's writings came to mind. It is found on page 424 of Science and Health and reads as follows: "Accidents are unknown to God, or immortal Mind, and we must leave the mortal basis of belief and unite with the one Mind, in order to change the notion of chance to the proper sense of God's unerring direction and thus bring out harmony. Under divine Providence there can be no accidents, since there is no room for imperfection in perfection."
Thus fortified with Truth, I was able to assure others along the beach, who had rushed over to inquire if I had been hurt, that I was all right. Thanking them for their kindly solicitude, I excused myself in order to go to the cottage and change to dry clothes. As I changed, I worked earnestly to know the truth as Mrs. Eddy has given it to us in the above passage. When I left my room shortly afterward my wrist was quite normal, and there was no sign whatever of the accident.
