In the Bible we read of Jehoiachin (II Kings 25:30): "And his allowance was a continual allowance given him of the king, a daily rate for every day, all the days of his life." This verse and the sentence, "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need," from page 494 of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy were a great comfort to me when the breaking up of my home caused me much sorrow.
It became necessary for me to support my two children; and by holding steadfastly to the truths of spiritual supply, which I learned from my study of Science, I secured a position. Each day I had to realize that supply is infinite and not confined to a bank account or to income from employment. By relying on Mrs. Eddy's statement from "Miscellaneous Writings" that "God gives you His spiritual ideas, and in turn, they give you daily supplies" (p. 307), I was able to secure a loan to finance a home, although making a very moderate salary. Divine Love continues to meet our every human need.
When my son was very young, we were visiting in my sister's home in a city quite distant from our home. The morning that we were preparing to return by automobile, the boy climbed up on an iron folding bed which fell over on him, and a deep gash was cut in his face by a piece of the iron bed. Much fear was expressed: and someone made the recommendation that stitches be taken.
Since the child was crying uncontrollably, I asked that we be permitted to go into another room alone until he quieted down. I felt no fear, sensing the ever-presence of God. I sat in a chair with the boy in my lap and repeated aloud '"The Mother's Evening Prayer" by Mrs. Eddy.
Finally the crying ceased. So I proposed we sing the words together, and we did. The words, "O gentle presence," meant a great deal to me at this time. They are the opening words of the first verse, which reads (Poems, p. 4):
O gentle presence, peace and joy and power;
O Life divine, that owns each waiting hour,
Thou Love that guards the nestling's faltering
flight!
Keep Thou my child on upward wing tonight.
After talking of God's great love for His children and assuring the child that he was ever enfolded in this love, I asked him if he felt we could start for home, and he was ready to leave. I called a Christian Science practitioner in our hometown to ask her to give him prayerful treatment during the long journey home; this she willingly did.
Whenever the child felt uncomfortable on the way home, we immediately turned our thoughts to God and continued on our way, singing and praising God. I am grateful to say that by the time we reached home my son was feeling quite normal, and within a few days the cut had healed. We are very grateful for the help of the practitioner at this time and for the fact that the truth was immediately available to us to help overcome the false picture presented.
Our Christian Science lectures have always been a source of much inspiration to me. One morning I called a practitioner to tell her I was too ill to go to my place of employment. She repeated several statements from a lecture we had both heard on the radio the evening before, including assurances of God's allness and ever-presence and of the fact that since God's idea continually expresses right activity, this truth can be demonstrated in our human experience. By the time the telephone conversation ended I felt well enough to go to my work; and when I returned home in the afternoon, I was completely free.
I am especially grateful to the practitioner who has helped me to progress on the pathway from sense to Soul and for the love and helpfulness expressed by all practitioners and by my family and friends. Indeed, I am grateful for our Way-shower, Christ Jesus, for our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, who gave us an understanding of the Bible and its applicability to our everyday life, and for all the activities of the Christian Science movement.— Jackson, Mississippi.
