FROM THE DIRECTORS
Meetings in the Interest of Branch Church Activities
In planning an occasional meeting in the interest of one or more of the activities of the church it has been found that the progress of Christian Science in the local field and the incentive of the members are increased if the members themselves have an active part in the program.
At times a branch church may wish to invite an experienced Christian Scientist from a neighboring church to address its members. The Mother Church has found it advisable to request its members to confine acceptance of invitations to address church memberships to an area within twenty-five miles from the limits of the city or town wherein the speaker holds branch church membership, and to accept not more than two such invitations during a calendar year.
Since each branch church must demonstrate its own growth, these meetings should be limited in attendance to the membership concerned. It is well to remember that meetings of this kind, if held too frequently, may become routine rather than inspirational.
Progress in a branch church depends on the spiritual growth of its members and on their daily metaphysical work for their church and its activity. As they prayerfully ponder and strive to make practical the definition of Church, given by Mary Baker Eddy in the Glossary of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 583), they will find their church fulfilling its mission and blessing the community.
THE 1964 NORMAL CLASS
The Normal class of the Board of Education was held early in December. In compliance with the By-Law, Article XXX, Section 1, of the Manual of The Mother Church by Mary Baker Eddy, this class convenes on the first Wednesday of December in each third year.
The teacher of the 1964 class was Ralph E. Wagers, C. S. B., of Boston. Mr. Wagers, a native of Michigan, has served the movement in many capacities, including that of practitioner, teacher, lecturer, President of The Mother Church, and, since 1959, Associate Editor of the religious periodicals.
The class was composed of pupils from Argentina, Australia, Canada, England, Scotland, France, and Germany, and from the following states: California, Connecticut, Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, Wisconsin, and from the District of Columbia.
REPORTS OF PROGRESS FOR THE ANNUAL MEETING
An opportunity to share reports of progress received from the Field is provided in Article XIII, Section 1, of the Manual of The Mother Church by our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy. The Christian Science Board of Directors welcomes such reports from branches of The Mother Church. Excerpts will be read from as many as time permits at the Annual Meeting of The Mother Church.
The Annual Meeting will be held on June 7 this year, and reports should reach The Christian Science Board of Directors, 107 Falmouth Street, Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A. 02115. not later than April 15.
CHANGES IN JOURNAL AND HERALD CARDS
All changes for cards (churches, societies, college organizations, practitioners, nurses) in The Christian Science Journal and The Herald of Christian Science (in its various editions) are handled by the Journal and Herald Card Department of The Christian Science Publishing Society, One Norway Street, Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A. 02115. Letters concerning changes should be sent directly to this department. Seasonal changes require particular attention. Changes for Journal and Herald cards should be received by the middle of the month, approximately two months prior to the issue in which they are to appear (for example: by April 15 for the June Journal). The only exception is the July Journal. Changes intended to appear in this issue should reach the Publishing Society not later than the first week in May.
PROGRESS THROUGH CHURCH MEMBERSHIP
"Each day," writes a new member, "I feel more grateful that I was led to Christian Science." She continues, "In my membership I am encouraged to take forward steps and to participate in the work which the Church gives us."
Are you eager to take forward steps in your understanding and application of Christian Science? Church membership will help you to do this.
Application blanks and information concerning membership in The Mother Church may be obtained at Christian Science Reading Rooms, from clerks of branch churches or societies, from practitioners listed in The Christian Science Journal or in The Herald of Christian Science. Applications may also be obtained from Gordon V. Comer, Clerk, 107 Falmouth Street, Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A. 02115.
FUND FOR ARMED SERVICES ACTIVITIES
The thousands of Christian Scientists in the armed services, who are serving their respective countries throughout the world, are being helped by The Mother Church through the Fund for Armed Services Activities.
Christian Science Ministers are paid from this Fund. These workers conduct Christian Science services, give treatments, and visit and work with those in veterans' hospitals who seek and rely wholly on Christian Science for healing. They contact the soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines who indicate Christian Science as their religious preference, giving them Service Edition sets of the Bible and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy and, in the case of young recruits, helping them to adjust to their military experience. Quantities of authorized Christian Science literature are distributed among the Armed Forces personnel.
The scope of the work is great, for The Mother Church has Christian Science Ministers and field workers placed in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Australia, Japan, Korea, and other countries. During the past year, approximately $300,000 was expended to carry on this work.
Contributions are welcome and should be sent to Roy Garrett Watson, Treasurer, 107 Falmouth Street, Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A. 02115.
INTERNATIONAL MONEY ORDERS
International money orders reaching the Publishing Society in Boston contain only the name and address of the sender and the amount. To help us serve you better, will you please write to us at the time you purchase the money order and tell us what your remittance is for. This will enable us to avoid the delay caused by the necessity of writing to you.
