Just before entering college I found that I had a distressing physical problem, and I turned to Christian Science for healing. During college the condition became more aggravated, and after I graduated I moved from my hometown to Washington, District of Columbia, in order to work more closely with a Christian Science practitioner who was helping me.
When I arrived in Washington, I had little money and knew I would have to find a job quickly. I worked closely with the practitioner on this and took all the usual human footsteps, but weeks went by and still I had no job. Finally one night in great discouragement I turned completely to God and said, "God, what do You want me to do? Just tell me. I'll do anything You say." The answer which came to me after I had prayed seemed a strange one. The thought was to let go and to go horseback riding the next day. Riding, which had been a great joy in my life, was my favorite hobby. However, this answer seemed rather absurd, as I had barely enough money to pay for a ride, but the idea kept coming, "Go riding." The next day I did trust God and let go of all the human outlining.
I went to an area where several stables were located. I walked past one attractive stable and then rode at the second. Afterward I mentioned to the owner that I had had experience in riding and if assistance was ever needed on weekends I would like to help out in return for riding.
