A SPIRITUAL JOURNEY

PART 2

Jim Lugsdin: Providing spiritual solutions to victims of drug abuse

From the December 2003 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In part one [November 2003], the resident physician for a 22–bed, government-funded, free, inpatient drug Detox Center in the greater Vancouver, British Columbia, area, told about his spiritual journey to Christian Science. Jim continues to practice medicine at this facility in Vancouver, but he also brings the spiritual concepts he is daily gaining from reading Science and Health to his work. Jim spend ten years in general practice and then moved into public health medicine. He has post-graduate degrees in epidemiology from the University of British Columbia and holds Royal College Fellowship papers in Public Health. He has been in the medical profession for over 40 years. Jim spoke with Journal Managing Editor,

As Jim drives me through the part of Vancouver where drug dealers and users congregate, he stops the car at a red light. An emaciated woman walks across the street. He looks at me and says, "She could be one of my patients, if she decides to get off drugs." Just a few blocks away, more or less to the left of where we are sitting, a beautifully restored part of Vancouver called Gastown delights visitors and residents alike. But where Jim and I are, the words "mean streets" echo from the boarded up store fronts and the overall atmosphere of decay.

The Detox Center where Jim works is just a few blocks away to the right, removed from the beauties of Gastown.
