From Jerusalem to Jericho—a modern-day parable

You're driving from your home in Jerusalem to Jericho. Someone pulls up beside you and forces you off the road. You're beaten and robbed. You're left alone by the roadside.

Suddenly you realize that someone is staring at you from the road. You make out that it's the rabbi from the local temple. He looks directly at you for a bit, then crosses to the other side of the road, jumps in his car, and disappears. You wonder why he didn't help.

Why would two travelers pass by someone in need?
