Have you ever been stopped in your tracks by a train crossing in front of you? You sit and wait as car after endless car goes by, but no matter how frustrating it may be to wait it out, there’s one thing you know about that train. It will come to an end. It’s guaranteed you will cross those tracks whether it takes five minutes, 15 minutes, or even more. And while you’re waiting, there’s plenty you can do—silently, persistently, compassionately, productively—you can pray for yourself, your family, your neighbors, even the world.
As we all know, the world did not come to an end in December of 2012, in spite of what the commonly called Mayan prophecy predicted—a prophecy based on centuries-old calculations. There has never really been any guarantee that it would.
But a good measure of something did come to an end, and it’s coming more and more to an end every day: evil, error, in all the ways it parades itself to humanity—hatred, war, misery, disease, sin, and even death. And that is a guaranteed promise of divine law. As the Psalmist recognized, “Destructions are come to a perpetual end” (Psalms 9:6).
