Ever wish you had a friend with whom you could openly discuss anything and everything that was on your mind? He or she would patiently listen as you poured out your doubts, hopes, and fears. Even if you didn’t express yourself very well, this person would somehow understand what you meant. Then, at the right moment, offer a quiet, simple reply, filled with clear wisdom and hopeful inspiration—as if they had lived through the same issues you were wrestling with.
Such a friend or companion may sound too good to be true—an unrealistic ideal we could only wish for, but never find. But this kind of friend may be closer than you think! In fact, I found just such a friend the summer before I entered middle school. That was when I read through Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures for the very first time. That friend, of course, was, and still is, Mary Baker Eddy.
In Sunday School, we’d spoken of Mrs. Eddy as the Discoverer, Founder, and Leader of Christian Science. But I’d also been impressed by her as the author of such an interesting book. There was something very special here. The unique wisdom, and spiritual logic of some of the ideas in Science and Health made more sense to me than much of what I was learning in school.
