Facing down fear of ticks

From The Christian Science Journal - August 7, 2011

There are a lot of great outdoor activities here in Missouri, but depending on the season, there are a lot of ticks too. One day I found a tick attached to my body. In the past when I removed ticks, the head remained embedded, causing irritation. More than that, I always felt fearful, thinking that I might get sick because of the belief—and the widespread media coverage—that ticks are parasites that can spread disease.

To deal with this fear, I decided it was time to pause and listen to God. This wasn’t easy at first—fear kept interrupting my prayer. I knew from experience that God is great and infinite. Fear and God cannot coexist. I turned my thought repeatedly to God, and as my initial fear abated, I was able to get calm, pray more clearly, and challenge the suggestion of disease whenever it came to thought.

It occurred to me that God never created a parasite. Not only that, God never created a parasitic thought. Also, in Christian Science it’s a fixed fact that there is no intermingling of good and evil, truth and error. Error, another name for evil, has never touched truth. As a child of God, my purity was a law of immunity. That meant that I was immune to contamination.
