When Jesus said to his disciples, “Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink” or wear (Matt. 6:25)—he didn't promote frugality, nor did he expect others to work so that they could hand out what the disciples needed. Jesus recommended that his followers first seek “the kingdom of God, and his righteousness” (Matt. 6:33), and in turn their daily needs would be met. He didn’t outline how, but he knew they would be provided for.
Why was Jesus so sure of that? What does taking “no thought for the morrow” (Matt 6:34) have to do with becoming a healer as he expected his followers to be?
What Jesus understood to be the riches of the kingdom of God holds the key to our receiving what we need exactly when we need it. For example, he asked the disciples not to take extra sandals and coats when he sent them out to heal. And he and his disciples were fed with what was left after a harvest and were given places to stay by people who recognized the spiritual richness Jesus lived. What was it that he had that impelled others to give in this way? He had the treasure of all treasures—the truth that proved man’s birthright, worth, and freedom as a child of God.
