As I hear of the devastating effects of destructive weather around the world, I’ve been praying to understand more of God’s protecting power and our innate ability to hear God’s guidance at all times. In the chapter “Christian Science Practice,” in her book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy asks the reader: “Are material means the only refuge from fatal chances? Is there no divine permission to conquer discord of every kind with harmony, with Truth and Love?” (p. 394).
The answer to the first question is no! The answer to the second one: There is divine permission to conquer all discord. It is God, Spirit, who protects and governs everyone, through His unfailing laws, under every condition and circumstance. He doesn’t leave His children vulnerable to chance or fatalities. We may have a long way to go in our understanding of God to see this more widely demonstrated. But because God has indeed given us the authority to overcome evil with good, we can turn to Him in prayer and expect to see evidence of His harmonious government in our lives right now.
I saw proof of this one winter several years ago when my children were in their teens and early 20s and still living at home. They were all out on a Friday evening when an unexpected snow began to fall. We live in a part of the United States that doesn’t get much snow, but when it does, driving becomes hazardous because of the hills and the fact that people aren’t used to driving under those conditions. Schools close, organizations cancel their meetings, and everything generally comes to a stop until the roads are clear again.
