In celebrating Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee earlier this year, honoring the Queen’s 60 years on the throne, the concept of another kind of tribute—one for dedicating a lifetime to God in healing service to others—really resonated with me.
While there could never be any comparison between Her Majesty and any of us, I felt heartened when, at the Jubilee, the Archbishop of Canterbury spoke with gratitude in recognition of service to others, praising qualities such as dedication to duty, a genuine embrace and joy in serving others, holding the well-being of others close to our heart, and true selflessness. These wonderful qualities may be applied to anyone who seeks to serve his or her fellow man.
One such person, Mary Baker Eddy, tirelessly set out to preserve for posterity her amazing discovery of the Christ Science that heals the sick, through her devotion and commitment to God. She went beneath the surface of material appearances, limitations, and illnesses, to the bedrock of true spirituality, which frees and heals, and which motivated her loving and unwavering service to humanity.
