I was planning to travel to Buenos Aires with my family to attend a one-day meeting, and then spend a few days visiting the city. Our 9-year-old and 13-year-old sons were coming with us.
We had already bought the tickets for our trip when, 14 days before our departure, our younger son had an outbreak all over his body. In compliance with school requirements, we consulted with a doctor who said that the boy had chicken pox and that the condition was serious. When we told him of our plans to travel in 12 days, he said that it wouldn’t be possible because the child was not going to recover in such a short time. And he added that his older brother had also caught the disease, since he hadn’t had it before.
We immediately turned to God in prayer. We also called a Christian Science practitioner and asked for support through prayer. While reading the book Science and Health, I found this passage: “Truth handles the most malignant contagion with perfect assurance” (p. 176). This led me, along with my wife and my older son, to pray with great confidence, knowing that no diagnosis could oppose the divine law that sustains man as spiritual and perfect. Man permanently reflects and expresses God, good. God has not created disease or anything that could contradict His perfect creation. God’s child is innocent and pure. There is nothing that can take away his joy or condemn him to sickness. The inspiration that prayer brought us filled us with the assurance that nothing could prevent our younger son from taking part in this trip and having a good time with his family. And his brother also couldn’t be condemned by a belief in contagion.
