During a weekend getaway in the mountains less than a year after I finished college, I had one of the most defining experiences of my life. My mom had come with me that weekend, as we had planned on exploring the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee.
On the car ride down from Washington, D.C., I read the Christian Science Bible Lesson aloud while my mom drove. We discussed the context and nuances of the Bible stories, the deeper meaning of certain passages, and the light that Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, shed on the corresponding Bible verses in the Lesson. This devotion of thought proved to be helpful in the coming days in ways we couldn’t have imagined.
In two days we did all the things we had planned. We went horseback riding in the mountains, had a scenic lunch, and went hiking. It was October; the leaves on the trees were just starting to change color, and the sky was a deep blue.
