Christian Science teaches that man, the spiritual identity of each one of us, is purely spiritual and not at all material. Is this absolute idea an invention of the human mind, or is it a scientific discovery? Is it a made-up fantasy that cannot be proved, as some thinkers might speculate, or is it demonstrable reality?
To understand how something so apparently abstract is nevertheless real, it may be worthwhile to ask ourselves the same question about mathematics. Is mathematics a fabrication of the human mind? No. On the contrary, a succession of extremely bright individuals through the centuries has discovered, explored, and presented various mathematical laws, which were already true before being discovered. We may not even have finished discovering all the laws of mathematics today, but, even so, those laws exist, whether we perceive them or not.
Mathematics provides a way of understanding and expressing the laws of nature. Mathematicians find the laws of math satisfying because those laws work and can be demonstrated universally, even by those who are not mathematicians, in infinite applications.
