Mary Baker Eddy saw service to church as a healing activity, and she put great emphasis on prayer as the primary way we can serve church. Thus, our Sunday church services and Wednesday testimony meetings are healing services in which all who gather in the spirit of selfless sharing are blessed.
When I was First Reader in my branch church, I often felt the healing presence of the Christ during church services. On many occasions, the Second Reader and I were healed of physical challenges during these services.
As a former First Reader, I was recently asked to substitute for a Sunday service and the following Wednesday testimony meeting. I gladly accepted this assignment and the opportunity to deepen my study in preparation for the readings from the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy. However, during my study, I began to experience severe symptoms of irritation in one eye, making reading difficult. That week’s subject of the Bible Lesson from the Christian Science Quarterly was “Mortals and Immortals,” and the Golden Text was from First Corinthians: “When that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. … For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face” (13:10, 12).
