When we are praying, God alerts us to whatever we are entertaining in thought that needs to be corrected. To uncover the source of trouble, we may sometimes be led to ask ourselves probing moral questions.
Several years ago I had sores on the bottom of both of my feet, which made walking very painful. At first I thought some physical irritation might be causing the condition, but when there was still no healing after a year, I realized it was useless to look for a material cause. I needed to turn my attention to the mental realm.
