One day I was walking our Labrador retriever on a busy sidewalk when he started to lean on my leg while we waited for the light to change. I thought it was strange, so I gently pushed him off. As we got to the other side of the street, he did it again. Again, I gently pushed him off, but shortly after that, he completely collapsed on the sidewalk. He looked at me with fearful eyes. So with my gaze fixed on him, I immediately knelt down by his side and prayed.
There were three specific thoughts that came to me during this prayerful treatment. The first was that Mary Baker Eddy was known to heal animals when she was a very young girl on her family farm, way before she discovered Christian Science. I knew that I, too, could feel that same childlike trust in God.
The second was from the Christian Science Hymnal: “In heavenly Love abiding, / No change my heart shall fear; / And safe is such confiding, / For nothing changes here” (Anna L. Waring, No. 148). I knew that my dog’s health could not go from perfection to illness, because it is impossible for God’s creation to change from perfection to imperfection.
