A colleague on a business trip, habitually fearful about driving in the rain, e-mailed me because a heavy downpour was forecast for the first day of her journey home. I wanted to assure her that she could experience safety and calm while driving under any condition. I stayed quiet until a thought came to share with her: “Which is bigger—God or the rain?”
Thinking about this, she realized that the all-good God was in control and was all-powerful. Then she fearlessly drove for several hours through heavy rain, proving in a modest way that nothing could separate her from God.
When conditions arise that tempt us to be fearful, we can shut out anxious thoughts and instead listen for God’s angel messages that calm, comfort, and strengthen us. A Bible verse from Second Timothy shows the kind of security and authority God has given His loved children: “God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” (II Timothy 1:7). Because fear doesn’t come from God, it has no power to dominate our thinking, turning us into cowards. We can mentally and vigorously declare our God-given dominion and evict fearful thoughts, knowing they are powerless.
