Today we’re bombarded by sound bites, commercials, acronyms, and apps of every variety imaginable. One of the most popular is the Nike slogan “Just do it.” The message is that we shouldn’t sit around strategizing, plotting, and procrastinating but should actually get out there and participate in our sport.
Similarly, it’s imperative to get out there on the field of life and heal! Think about it—if all we ever do is read about how to play tennis but never practice our serve or ground strokes, we won’t be much of a tennis player. Likewise, if all we ever do is read about Christ Jesus’ teachings and wonderful works, or read the writings of Mary Baker Eddy without ever actually practicing in our daily lives what they say, we won’t be much of a Christian Scientist. The demonstrations of truths found in the Bible and Mrs. Eddy’s writings are what prove divine Science is the Comforter Jesus promised us.
So, while it’s essential to study the Bible and Mrs. Eddy’s writings, especially her central work, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, we each have the responsibility to practice what we’re reading by demonstrating that true creation—including our own identity—is spiritual, not material, continuously governed by God, not by material laws. In other words, we must put our understanding into practice. As Mrs. Eddy tells us: “It is possible,—yea, it is the duty and privilege of every child, man, and woman,—to follow in some degree the example of the Master by the demonstration of Truth and Life, of health and holiness” (Science and Health, p. 37).
