It was 1997. I woke up one morning with a strong pain in my stomach. From that moment on, I became unable to eat any spicy food or to sleep well, and I continued experiencing stomachaches. This difficult situation lasted several months.
The friend with whom I shared a room, seeing what was happening, told me that I was probably suffering from stomach ulcers. He added that I needed to go to the hospital for a specialized examination, in order to find out exactly what the problem was.
However, I had just become familiar with Christian Science. As soon as the first symptoms had appeared, the textbook of Christian Science, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, had become my constant support and refuge. I started to study the book deeply, being convinced that suffering was not part of my real, spiritual and perfect being, and that it would disappear naturally through a better understanding of Christian Science. This is explained in the Preface of Science and Health as follows: “The physical healing of Christian Science results now, as in Jesus’ time, from the operation of divine Principle, before which sin and disease lose their reality in human consciousness and disappear as naturally and as necessarily as darkness gives place to light and sin to reformation. Now, as then, these mighty works are not supernatural, but supremely natural” (p. xi).
